If Singapore is a melting pot, then Joo Chiat and Katong are the condiments. Here, Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Eurasian, Malay, Indian and Chinese cultures intermingle to perfection. The area of old architecture and well known eateries repays visitors with quiet pleasure. Cultural mementoes and treasure bargains are easily found in the area, such as at Rumah Bebe, an arts and crafts store/museum, and Katong Antique House, among others. The biggest reason for natives to visit is the famous Katong food. Nonya laksa stalls are the best in the country. Little confectioneries from Chin Mee Chin, one of the last Hainanese coffeshops, is another crowd favourite. So are dumplings from Jin Zhu.
